Branding Exercise

Branding: Branding has always been a major core element in being an artist, and promoting music. With Spotify adding over 60,000 tracks to their platform on a daily basis, artists need to ensure they brand and campaign their music beyond creating an album and artwork for it. Branding campaigns for musicians need to work across video content, merchandise, social media, band logos and more. A musician's branding needs to be synonymous with its music and members, instantly recognisable and above all, timeless. Musicians that nailed their branding campaigns: 1) Ed Sheeran Back in 2015, Ed Sheeran announced via his social media platforms that he was taking a break to travel the world and see everything that he's missed. Exactly one year after that, Sheeran returned to Instagram posting a simple plain light blue square. This marked the beginning of the branding campaign for his album 'Divide'. It took his almost another month to post again, this time officially announcing t...

Digipak Imagery

Digipak Imagery: Ed Sheeran’s “Best Part of Me” is a tender love song in which Sheeran and YEBBA portray the role of lovers with self-esteem issues.  In other words when they self-reflect they notice a number of personal flaws, and with Sheeran some of these are even physical, as in him feeling he is unattractive. Or as the singers themselves put it, they don’t even ‘love themselves’. Thus they are highly appreciative of the affection they respectively receive from each other, as it imbues them with a sense of self-value amidst all of the aforementioned internal negativity. Or as they artistically put it in the song, they perceive the ‘best part of themselves’ to actually be the other person.  And this expression adequately ties together the two main narratives being told in this track, which is the singers having personal issues yet simultaneously being deeply in love with the other person. This is something that we are trying to incorporate into our music video, and t...

Filming Prep

Confirming Talent: The talent we are planning on having perform is Chloe, Oscar, Tait and T. Meggan. However the combination of the people we need to film at certain times does not line up in terms of availability. Kevin, Oscar and I all go to the same school, but do not share the same study breaks, Chloe is at university and has work, so we will need to see when she is available. Ethan and Amy both work as well so it's a similar situation to Chloe. We have changed this to Teacher Meggan and Tait and are planning on filming it later - either the week after we film the performance footage or in the holidays, which allows us to film and edit the footage we have first, and confirms our talent as this scene was one that we really wanted to have. Since the main location we are filming at is the Church Sanctuary, we need to book in advance in order to be able to use the space as people are filming in there throughout the day. Wednesdays are unavailable as filming for kids ministry is h...

A2 Music Video Exemplars

Image
A2 Music Video Exemplars: "Stuck" by Canopy Climbers This song seems to be about being torn or "stuck" in a situation in which you want to go back in time to a place where it was meant to be the prime of his life, and being young and reckless, but also recognising the mistakes made and how we can't change them. There appears to be two main characters, one who continues to make mistakes and doesn't change or learn from his errors, and the other guy who learns from his mistakes and seeks to improve. For example, it showed one guy being beat up so he starts to train and get stronger in order to fight back and not get caught in that situation again or caught off guard. Furthermore, the lyrics say ' My eyes are stuck in a gaze reflecting every move you make,  Another one trapped in a maze repeating all the same mistakes.'  This can link to the two different characters being like the two different eyes. The first part of that line is the guy who learns f...

Lip-syncing Practice

Image
Lip-syncing Practice: For the lip-syncing practice, Kevin and I chose the song 'First Times' by Ed Sheeran. It is the same genre as 'Best Part of Me', which is pop, but it is also a slower song, more like a ballad, which matches the style that 'Best Part of Me' is. It is not a song that uses many of the usual conventions that one would recognise within the pop genre, such as bright lights and lots of movement, but is a slower song that is meant to portray and emphasise meaning and evoke emotions.

Mise-en-scene Planning

Mise-en-scene Planning: Best Part of Me Mood Board by Brianna Hodder Symbolism:  The colours that will be used throughout the music video will mainly be earthy colours such as browns and natural colours. Oscar's jacket will be a black and red checkered/plaid jacket. This is something Ed himself has worn on several occasions and would fit his personality and the vibe that we are going for. The colours combination is aesthetically powerful with red's association with and representation of life, vigor and black's grounding force and balances it out. His guitar is brown which often is used to represent a sense of strength and reliability, while grey, the colour of his jeans, represents neutrality and balance. Overall, the idea that is coming across is the idea that Oscar is someone that his partner in the music video can rely on and will always be there no matter what. However, the colour grey also has negative connotations and this is symbolic of the doubts that the c...
