A2 Music Video Exemplars:
"Stuck" by Canopy Climbers
This song seems to be about being torn or "stuck" in a situation in which you want to go back in time to a place where it was meant to be the prime of his life, and being young and reckless, but also recognising the mistakes made and how we can't change them. There appears to be two main characters, one who continues to make mistakes and doesn't change or learn from his errors, and the other guy who learns from his mistakes and seeks to improve. For example, it showed one guy being beat up so he starts to train and get stronger in order to fight back and not get caught in that situation again or caught off guard. Furthermore, the lyrics say 'My eyes are stuck in a gaze reflecting every move you make, Another one trapped in a maze repeating all the same mistakes.' This can link to the two different characters being like the two different eyes. The first part of that line is the guy who learns from his mistakes and the second part is the other guy who continues to make mistakes and sees this in his relationships.
I like how the relationship between lyrics and visuals has been created, by linking the shots and matching it with each lyric. However, it has not been done too excessively which is good because it shows a range of shots and background information while still keeping it relevant to the storyline.
"Nostalgia" by NAO
This music video is not really something that I usually enjoy watching. However, I did find it interesting how this student used several close ups of the mouth to emphasise parts of the lyrics. 'It's just the way nostalgia makes me feel' changes shots on each word, cutting to a different person singing the lyrics. Also cutting to the beat and matching the visuals to the lyrics has been used effectively. I'm feeling caught up, lost to insanity relates to the unusual elements portrayed in the music video. It does incorporate key elements of the pop genre such as the quick cuts and bright colours that are seen with the glow sticks, lava lamp and balloons.
"Blessed" by Josh A
I like this music video straight from the start, when the hue of the shot changes each time he walks past a pillar in the first couple of seconds. Additionally, it starts off slow but when the lyrics start - which are reasonably fast - the outlines of landmarks and his body as well as OT flashes on and off around each thing, while staying consistent with the common colour theme of orange. Cutting and effects used, such as the splitting of RGB emphasises the hip-hop/rap genre that this song falls into. The changing of the hues is repeated but rather than changing after passing a certain landmark/specific place, it changes according to the beat. The use of orange is used frequently as mentioned earlier, but it is also used for silhouette shots and in flashing sequences; rather than showing black and white flashes, it is orange. There are many different types of cuts used. One I like in particular is the flickering that makes it seem like it is coming from a film reel as the shots change (this is seen at 45 seconds ish). I also really like how they used the same shots (at 1:56 seconds) from the beginnig, but in reverse. It really creates this element that is repeated throughout the whole music video of repeating certain sequences or shots, and easily fits into the genre and the expectations that come with it when making a music video for it.
